Talking about Tiësto is not just talking about a DJ anymore. The spectacle surrounding by his events cannot be ignored since they are a significant contribution to the general opinion of him being a DJ.
This time he was requested by another fortune 500 company (Volvo) to add a musical aspect to their sailing event called the Volvo Ocean Race. This race is all about 7 sailing boats trying to round the world as fast as possible. Cape Town, Melbourne, Wellington, Rio de Janeiro, Baltimore, New York, Portsmouth, Rotterdam and Gothenburg are the cities the boats will visit. A globe trotter as Tiësto has visited many of these cities more than once before, and his task was to wrap the characteristics of these places in musical journey.
The expectations in Rotterdam were high. 100.000 to 150.000 people were standing at the warf waiting for a pontoon where the maestro would be launching his pleasant tunes from.
One speaker was located every 10 meters at the wharf. At 22:30 the sun was going down. Boats were no more allowed to cross a part of the Maas river of about 500 square meters big. A pontoon having a sailing boat with green and pink lights on top could be seen from a distance.
At 22:50 the music started with a very quit, and a bit of a sad melody. The building of the main Dutch telecom operator, and the port of Rotterdam was turned into a big projection screen. It was featuring the Dutch sailor Hans HorreVoets. He was a crew member aboard one of the yachts that died two days ago during a battle against five meter seas and 30 knot winds. He was swept overboard and failed to regain consciousness after his young crew mates succeeded in finding him and made attempts to resuscitate him. Goosebumps all over the place. A tribute for all them that were involved in this tragedy that's not easy to forget.
20 little boats start to circle the pontoon a few moments later. They spread smoke that could have been useful to break the beams of a laser. Two big lasers were located on top of the two tall surrounding buildings, but they probably didn't work quite well as they weren't used a lot during the show.
Different type of lights were moving, and blinking exactly on the beat of the music, and different color themes were used for different tracks. The people were amazed, until the 5 flashing lights start to orchestre the beat of the drums during the intro of the Lethal Industry 2006 edit track. Tiësto played this record one month ago during queensday in Amsterdam, and the 60.000 people crowd went nuts. In Rotterdam he decided to do this all over again by having a collection of big red fireworks being set on fire at the DJ boat, and two of the tall buildings. They're not just two buildings, but two icons of corporate business that are during this night abused to take part of an event having a musical genre that was 15 years ago unmistakable linked to unacceptable behavior of sex, drugs and electronic dance music.
At the very last there were three flat pontoons being moved to the center of the area carrying 20 of what it looked like soldiers of the Special Forces dressed all in black. It could have been the start of the new James Bond movie. A few minutes later it turned out that these boats were loaded with gasoline that was burned on the beat of the music. The whole harbor was enlightened by fire. The amount of smoke coming from the boats was equal of a big building being on fire. The people on the wall were screaming.
Fireworks, lasers, colorful beams, visual technology and last but not least one and a half hour of meaningful melodic tunes made this evening more than just listening to the records of a DJ. The massive claxons of the boats in the harbor at the end of the show were symbolic for the appreciation of the audience. It was an event that most people there got caught of guard with. You expect some music, and maybe a performance of some artists, but you're flabbergasted when a square mile is changed into a colorful kaleidoscope.
Remember being a boy turning your own bedroom into a club by pumping up the volume and playing with those three color disco lamps? It's this desire to pleasure an audience by controlling the music and atmosphere. An event like this shows that Tiësto has never lost this desire. He's living this boys dream to the max.Tiesto Nature Challenge - Fireworks EndRotterdam Tiesto Open Air: a spectacular Tiesto event

He's living this boys dream to the max.Tiesto Nature Challenge - Lethal IndustryRotterdam Tiesto Open Air: a spectacular Tiesto event
